LOOKING FOR A GREAT SAR DOG?

This is Sara & her Avalanche Search Handler, John

Sara is 10 months old in this photo

Sara is a full sister (different litter) to Doozie, the mother of our upcoming litter.

I received this photo and comments from John, who works with Avalanche Search & Rescue in Colorado.

"Thought I'd give you an update...Sara (from Belle and Pete's May 23, 2008 litter) is learning her job faster than any dog I've seen.  She is turning into a very accomplished search and rescue dog and everyone is impressed with her capabilities at only 10 months!

She runs a lot of the time but I don't let her run down steep hills...I carry her on my back.  She rides there happily.

Here's a photo of us at work."

"Sara loves the snow.  To train an avalanche search dog, we begin with simple hide and seek, progress to hiding in open holes in the snow, then cover the person hiding with a little snow, then more, and finally we dig a sort of "L" shaped tunnel with a small snow cave at the bottom.  The "victim" crawls down the vertical shaft and into the cave at the bottom and we fill the shaft.  The surrounding area gets turns over (like cultivating) so there's no visual clue.  After allowing time for scent to rise, the dog is ordered to search.  A Certifed Dog must be able to find two such victims, buried a minimum of 3 feet deep, in a 150' by 150' area in 20 minutes.

Last week in a practice drill, Sara found both victims in one minute and 30 seconds!

When John contacted me asking whether he thought our puppies would be good at Search & Rescue, I replied, "How good of a SAR Dog trainer are you?"  Because, it is my belief that a dog is a reflection of her relationship with her owner. So, of course, I cannot take all the credit  for Sara's abilities as a super SAR prospect.  But, John was on track seeking a working-bred Border Collie for his next partner.  Our goal is to breed for a sound work ethic in a dog with a great body and mind.  Border Collies bred to our standards can excel in any working venue when they are paired with a handler that brings out the best in the dog!  Kudos to John and Sara.  Hopefully, all of John's dedication to her training will result in Sara making a huge difference in many people's lives!
